FAQ

How can I support but not attend?
There are several ways in which you can be supportive, but not attend meetings or participate in interest groups.  For example, you can renew your national, state, and branch membership each year to help fund initiatives.  Or, you can be a Two Minute Activist to let legislators know what issues you support.  Or, you can make monetary donations to support our scholarship program for students at UH Maui College.  For more information on this, please check out the Maui Branch Page and Outreach Projects Page.

Can I belong to more than one branch?
Yes, you can belong to multiple/dual branches.  You will need to pay both state and branch dues for both branches, as well as your national dues.  Our Maui Branch has many members with dual memberships because we have folks who live here part-time.

Do I have to renew my membership every year?
Yes, you do.  Our fiscal year is from July 1 to June 30, and you will usually begin receiving renewal notices from National in late March or early April.  They will give you an easy way to renew your national, state, and local membership in one fell swoop online.  The exception to that is if you purchase a lifetime membership for national, and then you will just owe your state and branch dues.

Can I belong to just state (or just national) (or just local) AAUW?
You have multiple types of membership available – you can belong to just national for $62.00 per year (2021-2022).  To belong to state, you must belong to national.  Hawaii state dues are currently $10 per year (2021-2022).  To belong to Maui Branch, you must belong to both national and state as well.  Maui Branch dues are currently $16 per year (2021-2022).  Thus, to be a Maui Branch member your dues for (2021-2022) which will carry you to June 30, 2022, will be $88.  If you are affiliated with another branch elsewhere, the expense would be different.

Do I have to attend speaker meetings to be a local member?
No, you can be as involved or as uninvolved as you want to be.  We welcome your attendance and input, but we will not coerce you!

What college degree do I need in order to become a member?
You need an associate’s degree (or equivalent diploma) or higher from a regionally or nationally accredited college.

Can I attend speaker meetings without becoming a member?
You may attend two activities without becoming a member.  We think it is wise to check things out before you commit, but you are also welcome to join and never attend!

Can I attend interest groups and special projects without becoming a member?
Again, you may attend two activities sponsored by the branch without becoming a member – interest group, speaker meeting, or other activities.
